The paradox of medical school is that most schools do not have minimum requirements for GPA and test scores (MCAT), yet have the highest admission standards out of any professional degree programs. The majority of medical schools do not have a minimum GPA or MCAT score requirement. However, there are a good number of schools that do.
We compiled a list of schools that have minimum requirements for overall undergraduate GPA, science GPA, and/or MCAT score.
While these schools have placed minimums on consideration, you will find the median GPA and MCAT of admitted students is quite higher than the minimum requirements. We have compiled a list of medical schools by their median GPA/MCAT/LizzyM for you to look at if you are interested in the numbers.
Schools With Lowest and Highest GPA Requirements
We found that the schools with the lowest undergraduate GPA requirement are Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine—both had a minimum requirement of a 2.5 undergraduate GPA.
The schools with the highest cumulative GPA requirement are the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the University of Ottowa Faculty of Medicine. Both require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
The schools with the lowest minimum science GPA requirement are the University of West Indies Faculty of Medical Science and the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Both require applicants to have a minimum science GPA of 2.5.
The school with the highest minimum science GPA requirement is the Meharry Medical College School of Medicine. The Nashville-based school requires a minimum of a 3.5 science GPA for consideration.
Schools With Lowest and Highest MCAT score Requirement
The schools with the lowest minimum MCAT score requirement are the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. They both require applicants to have a minimum 490 MCAT score.
The schools with the highest MCAT score requirement is the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. They require out-of-state applicants to have a minimum MCAT score of 514 (but 500 for in-state students).

Some public schools will have different minimum requirements for in-state applicants and out-of-state applicants.
One such school is the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine. In-state applicants need to have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and MCAT score of 500. Out-of-state applicants need a minimum science GPA of 3.49, cumulative GPA of 3.59, and MCAT of 514.
For schools that have different admission requirements for in-state and out-of-state applicants, the in-state requirement is the first number.
Canadian medical schools have a minimum MCAT score on a per-section basis. For instance the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry requires applicants to have a minimum of 124 per section.
